There are hundreds of rewarding and in-demand jobs in the healthcare field. Even if you are not at the top of your class, and you don’t want to spend the next 10-15 years of your life in school, you can work in the healthcare industry and make a difference in someone’s life.
Iowa has a shortage of trained health care professionals, which means there are more jobs than there are healthcare professionals to fill them. In addition, the healthcare industry is growing, so there are new job opportunities being created. Since healthcare professionals are needed all over the state, most careers offer you greater freedom to choose where you live and work.
One mission of NEI AHEC is to teach students about different healthcare career opportunities and help individuals find a career that fits their strengths, educational plans and personal goals. Follow the link below to help you find the right career choice for you.

. . . my shadowing experience couldn't have gone any better! Dr. Thompson and his staff were so welcoming, answered all of my questions, and made sure to introduce me to the patients right away. I am so glad I got the chance to see rural medicine up close and personal because the stereotypes I came in with painted only half the picture. I was so amazed at the broad spectrum of work Dr. Thompson does for the hospital and clinic; he's pretty much superman of the town. We would go from an appointment with a geriatric patient, to a baby well-check, to the ER to pop a dislocated shoulder back in place, and then back up to the office to see an 11-year-old for his sports physical-and, on top of all that, he does deliveries and is a medical examiner. I honestly don't know how he does it, but the patients all seem to love him and they joked around about how he delivered half the town AND their babies! I think this experience definitely confirmed for me that I would love to do Family Practice-it's pretty much the variety sample of medicine because you get a little of everything every day. Thank you again for setting this shadow experience up for me- it really boosted my motivation!
